On April 2, which is World Autism Awareness Day, the Dubai Autism Center started its 19th annual Autism Awareness Campaign. The campaign is under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence.
What’s the Goal of the Campaign?
The main goal of this campaign is to raise awareness about autism, help people understand it better, and support individuals with autism and their families. The theme of this year’s campaign connects with the "Year of the Community", announced by the UAE President, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This theme promotes creating an inclusive society where everyone feels accepted, no matter their abilities.

What’s Happening in the Campaign?
The campaign includes several exciting activities:
Landmarks in Dubai Lighting Up Blue: Famous landmarks like the Burj Khalifa, Burj Al Arab, Dubai Frame, Mohammed Bin Rashid Library, and Global Village will shine in blue to mark World Autism Awareness Day.
Awareness Workshops in Schools: Every week, workshops will be held in schools across the UAE to teach teachers and staff about autism and how to identify signs early.
Weekly TV Segments: The campaign will feature special segments on the show “Balsam” aired on Noor Dubai TV to spread awareness.
Free Early Detection & Assessment: The Dubai Autism Center is offering free sessions to help detect autism and other developmental disorders in children.
Special Book for Parents and Caregivers
The Dubai Autism Center has also released a new book called “Managing Behavioral Challenges in Children with Autism,” written by Dr. Bassam Darwish. This book is designed to help parents, caregivers, and teachers understand and manage challenging behaviors in children with autism. It offers practical advice and strategies to support children in their daily lives.
Support from Government and Organizations
Many important organizations are supporting this campaign, including:
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA)
Wasl Asset Management Group
Emirates Islamic Bank
Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA)
Dubai Police, Dubai Airports, and more
They all believe in creating a society where people with autism feel included, supported, and empowered.
Why Is This Important?
Autism is a condition that affects how people communicate, interact with others, and behave. It usually appears in early childhood and lasts for life. According to recent studies, 1 in 36 children is affected by autism.
The Dubai Autism Center has been working since 2001 to support people with autism and raise awareness. The annual Autism Awareness Campaign started in 2006 and has grown every year.
This campaign is not just about spreading awareness; it’s about building a community where everyone feels welcome and valued.
