Dolly Parton Drops Emotional Song 'If You Hadn’t Been There' for Carl Dean

Dolly Parton has released a new song called “If You Hadn’t Been There” in memory of her late husband, Carl Thomas Dean. She shared the song on March 6, 2023, with an old photo of the couple where Dolly is sitting on Carl’s back.

In her Instagram post, Dolly talked about their long love story. She wrote, “Carl and I fell in love when I was 18 and he was 23. Like all great love stories, they never end. They live in memory and in song, and I dedicate this to him.”

The song starts with Dolly singing, "If you hadn’t been there / Where would I be? / Without your trust, love, and belief." The song talks about how they always stuck together, through the good and bad times. Dolly sings, "The ups and downs / We've always shared / And I wouldn't be here, if you hadn't been there."

Carl Dean, Dolly’s husband of 58 years, passed away on March 3, 2023, at the age of 82. The couple got married in 1966, but Carl liked to stay out of the public eye, even though Dolly was very famous. He always supported her quietly from behind the scenes.

Dolly thanked her fans and family for their support after Carl's death. She wrote, "Thank you for all the messages, cards, and flowers you’ve sent to show your love for my husband Carl." She also said, "He is in God's arms now and I am okay with that. I will always love you," which is a reference to her famous song “I Will Always Love You.”

Dolly and Carl met at a laundromat in Nashville, and Carl said, “My first thought was ‘I’m gonna marry that girl.’” Dolly had said that Carl loved to keep his life private, but he always supported her in everything.

The song “If You Hadn’t Been There” is Dolly’s tribute to Carl and other people she has lost in her life, like her uncle Billy Earl Owens, who passed away in 2021. Dolly continues to share her love and memories through her music, remembering the people who meant so much to her.
