Denmark's Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, found herself at the center of a shocking incident when she was attacked in the streets of Copenhagen. Following the assault, Frederiksen conveyed a mixture of emotions, stating she felt "saddened and shaken," but assured the public that she was "fine" despite the ordeal.
The attack occurred when a man approached Frederiksen in Copenhagen's old town on Friday evening and struck her, causing minor whiplash. The assailant, identified as a 39-year-old Polish man, was swiftly apprehended by authorities. He appeared at the Court of Frederiksberg for a preliminary hearing and was charged with violence against a person in public service. Despite the charges leveled against him, the suspect denied any wrongdoing. However, he was remanded in custody until June 20th, pending further legal proceedings.

In the aftermath of the attack, Frederiksen was taken to a hospital for a check-up, prompting the cancellation of her official schedule for Saturday as a precautionary measure. Despite the physical and emotional toll of the incident, Frederiksen expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support she received from the public. In an Instagram message, she conveyed her appreciation for the "many, many, many messages of support and encouragement," describing them as "incredibly moving."
However, Frederiksen also emphasized her need for privacy and time with her family following the traumatic event. At 46 years old, she leads Denmark's Social Democrats and assumed the role of prime minister in 2019, making her the youngest in Danish history to hold the position.
The attack on Frederiksen drew widespread condemnation from European leaders, who expressed solidarity with the Danish prime minister. EU chief Charles Michel denounced the incident as "outrageous," while French President Emmanuel Macron described it as "unacceptable" and wished Frederiksen a "speedy recovery." The assault came just days before the European elections, adding an extra layer of significance to the event and sparking concerns about the safety and security of political leaders across the continent.
