A Special Court for Economic Offences has denied bail to Kannada actress Ranya Rao in a gold smuggling case. The court said that the charges against her are very serious. Judge Vishwanath C Gowdar agreed with the prosecution that Ranya should stay in judicial custody.
Ranya had been arrested in a major gold smuggling case. Initially, she applied for bail in a Magistrate Court, but her request was rejected. She then tried again in the Special Court for Economic Offences, but the court dismissed her plea once more.
After this, Ranya's lawyers are planning to go to the Sessions Court to ask for bail. Until a decision is made, she will stay in judicial custody.

Ranya Rao was arrested on March 4, 2025, for allegedly trying to smuggle 14.8 kilograms of gold worth Rs 12 crore into India. She was caught at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru while returning from Dubai. The gold was hidden in a special waist belt.
After her arrest, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) searched her house in Bengaluru and found gold jewelry worth Rs 2.06 crore and Rs 2.67 crore in cash. The total value of the seized items was Rs 17.29 crore.
Investigations have shown that Ranya, who is the stepdaughter of a senior police officer, had made around 30 trips to Dubai over the past year. During these trips, she is believed to have smuggled large amounts of gold. For each kilogram of gold smuggled, she is said to have earned Rs 1 lakh, which adds up to Rs 1213 lakh per trip.
During questioning, Ranya said that she got calls from unknown numbers telling her to meet someone at Dubai airport. She also claimed that she learned how to hide gold by watching YouTube videos.
Further investigations revealed that her stepfather, Director General of Police (DGP) K Ramachandra Rao, had asked a constable to give Ranya special treatment at Bengaluru Airport.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has started raiding places in Karnataka related to this case, suspecting that it might be part of a larger international gold smuggling network.
Additionally, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is also looking into Ranya's recent wedding. They are checking guest lists and expensive gifts to see if there are any connections to the smuggling operation.
