Chanel, the epitome of French luxury, broke away from tradition by choosing the rainy streets of Manchester for its annual Metiers d'Art runway show, held in a unique fusion of glamour and urban vibrancy on Thursday night. Under a transparent canopy on Thomas Street, Manchester's Northern Quarter, an international fashion audience, including renowned figures like Tilda Swinton, Hugh Grant, Kristen Stewart, Alexa Chung, and rapper Aitch, gathered for this exceptional display of haute couture.
Despite a backdrop of pro-Palestinian protesters' chants, the atmosphere was lively, with guests enjoying mulled cider and mini cheese toasties. Chanel transformed the everyday hustle and bustle of a Manchester street into a high-profile runway, creating a glamorous spectacle that resonated with the brand's ethos.
Manchester's Thomas Street, known for its trendy bars and traditional shops, became an elegant runway with local model Karen Elson gracing the catwalk. Chanel's Metiers d'Art show featured models showcasing playful interpretations of the iconic tweed ensembles against the backdrop of the city's vibrant street life. The collection displayed a burst of colors, including bright pink, orange, and green, complemented by low-heeled Mary Jane shoes.
This annual event not only highlights Chanel's intricate crafts, such as lace and embroidery but also pays homage to the specialized workshops near Paris where these masterpieces are created. The decision to shift the location to Manchester, a city deeply connected to Britain's 18th-century textiles industry, adds a layer of historical significance. Manchester's rich contributions to pop culture, sports, and fashion provide a unique and meaningful setting for Chanel's presentation.
Amidst the energetic music and lively fashion showcase, the protest chants faded into the background. The models, sporting 1960s-inspired hairstyles, paraded down the pavement, capturing the essence of Chanel's timeless elegance with a contemporary twist.
To extend the experience beyond the live event, Chanel released a film for this special collection on Friday. Directed by Sofia Coppola and featuring images by British photographer Jamie Hawkesworth, the film is set to the soundtrack of the iconic band New Order. This convergence of fashion, film, and music underscores Chanel's commitment to pushing the boundaries of creative expression and redefining the traditional fashion show experience.
