Ben Stiller, the director of Severance, says that some parts of Hollywood today feel unfair for artists. He talked about how the people who make big decisions are far away from the creators. In the show Severance, characters have an operation to separate their work life from their personal life.

Stiller said, “There’s always someone making decisions who you don’t even know about.” This is like in Hollywood, where the people who make the decisions are hidden from the creators.
Stiller also shared that he doesn’t always know why decisions are made. He said, “When decisions are made, the reasons are not told to the creators, and when they are, it’s not the full truth. In Hollywood, people often say ‘yes,’ but it doesn’t really mean yes. It usually means no or ‘I’ll think about it.’”
Stiller thinks these problems are part of bigger issues, like the problems after the pandemic, higher costs, and the strikes in Hollywood. He said, “It’s harder to make shows now. The strikes and the pandemic made things more expensive. People who make decisions are trying to keep their jobs, so they are making safer choices.”
The second season of Severance is coming soon with new actors like Gwendoline Christie and Alia Shawkat. The first season got a lot of attention with its story about work control and people feeling far away from each other. Fans are excited to see what will happen next.
