China has announced a new visa policy aimed at simplifying mainland entry for long-term residents of Hong Kong and Macau, enhancing cross-border travel opportunities for expatriates. Starting July 10, non-Chinese nationals residing in Hong Kong and Macau will be eligible for a five-year permit allowing multiple entries into mainland China, with each visit capped at 90 days.
The policy change, introduced by China's National Immigration Administration on the 27th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to Chinese sovereignty, seeks to integrate the semi-autonomous regions more closely into national development plans. It is expected to facilitate easier travel for residents of Hong Kong and Macau, supporting both business and leisure activities.
John Lee, Chief Executive of Hong Kong, expressed optimism about the new policy, highlighting its potential to enhance travel convenience for international talent associated with Hong Kong companies.

This move represents a significant relaxation of travel restrictions for foreign citizens residing in Hong Kong and Macau who do not hold passports from countries eligible for visa-free entry into China. The five-year visa applies specifically to permanent residents who have continuously lived in Hong Kong or Macau for at least seven years.
China's recent efforts to facilitate travel include granting visa-free access to citizens of several countries over the past year, such as France, Germany, Switzerland, and Australia, aimed at stimulating inbound tourism. Additionally, the proximity of Shenzhen, a burgeoning destination bordering Hong Kong, has attracted residents seeking affordable shopping and dining options, contributing to the integration of the Greater Bay Area economic cluster.
However, concerns have been raised among Hong Kong's restaurant and retail sectors about potential business losses to their counterparts in mainland China due to the evolving cross-border lifestyle. This development underscores China's strategic efforts to deepen regional integration while managing economic dynamics across its southern region and international borders.
