At least five Chinese tourists lost their lives and eight others were injured on the Indonesian resort island of Bali on Friday when their rental minibus plunged into a shallow ravine, local authorities confirmed.
The 13 Chinese nationals were traveling from Denpasar, Bali’s capital, to Buleleng in the northern region of the island when the tragic incident occurred. According to Widwan Sutadi, head of local police, the driver lost control of the vehicle. In an attempt to avoid a collision with another car, he swerved left, crashing into a tree, but the minibus was subsequently thrown off the road into a shallow ravine.
Emergency teams quickly transported the victims to the nearest hospital, where five passengers were pronounced dead. The driver survived the accident but sustained injuries.
Authorities are investigating the incident, focusing on road conditions, vehicle maintenance, and driver behavior. Bali, a top international tourist destination, has seen a rise in traffic accidents involving rental vehicles, raising concerns over tourist safety and road regulations.
Local officials have urged drivers and tourists alike to exercise caution, especially on Bali’s winding rural roads, which can be particularly hazardous during heavy traffic or poor weather conditions.
This tragic event has cast a shadow over Bali’s tourist-heavy season, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of safety measures and enhanced awareness campaigns for visitors navigating the island.
