Kathmandu, Nepal – On September 9, 2025, Nepal witnessed a historic wave of youth-led protests that led to the resignation of Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli. The protests erupted due to widespread anger over government corruption, growing economic problems, and a strict social-media ban that restricted public discussion and expression. Thousands of young people filled the streets, voicing their frustration against the political system, demanding transparency, and calling for change.
During these protests, major buildings in the capital, including the iconic Singha Durbar—the main administrative building for Nepal’s government—were set on fire. Security forces had earlier attempted to control the demonstrations, but violent clashes escalated, resulting in tragic loss of life and widespread destruction. Even the Prime Minister’s residence was attacked, highlighting the intensity of the unrest.

Balen Shah: From Rapper to Mayor
Amid this turmoil, one figure has captured the imagination of Nepal’s Generation Z: Balendra “Balen” Shah. Shah’s story is unique. Before entering politics, he worked as a civil engineer and gained popularity as a rapper. He later became the independent mayor of Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, starting his tenure on May 30, 2022.
As mayor, Shah focused on practical solutions for the city. He led anti-corruption initiatives, worked to improve road traffic systems, and promoted Buddhist tourism to attract visitors and strengthen Nepal’s cultural heritage. His independent status—being unaffiliated with traditional political parties—allowed him to speak freely and challenge established norms.
However, his bold actions sometimes sparked controversy. One such instance was when he displayed a “Greater Nepal” map in his office. The map suggested territorial claims that sparked criticism from neighboring India. Yet, Shah remained committed to expressing Nepal’s identity while balancing diplomatic sensitivities.
A Voice of Calm During Protests
Despite the chaos during the September 2025 protests, Balen Shah stood out for his measured approach. While many people were angry and rioting, he urged calm and peaceful dialogue. This stance resonated with young protesters who admired his ability to act responsibly while still demanding change.
Shah’s reputation for honesty, authenticity, and youth-centered policies made him a unifying figure. Many of Nepal’s youth began seeing him as a symbol of hope and as a possible leader who could rebuild the country on a foundation of fairness and transparency.
Gen Z Takes the Lead Online
The protests were not limited to the streets. Online platforms played a crucial role in organizing and amplifying youth voices. Generation Z in Nepal adopted creative symbols, including anime images and popular culture references such as the One Piece pirate flag. Hashtags like #Nepokid went viral, criticizing the country’s elite and exposing corruption in a way that appealed to young people.
Balen Shah quickly became the face of these online campaigns. Even though he has not formally announced any ambition to become the Prime Minister, many supporters have begun urging him to take the nation’s top political role. Discussions online speculate whether he would run as an independent candidate or form a new political party to lead Nepal.
Why Balen Shah Resonates with Youth
Several factors make Shah appealing to Nepal’s younger generation:
Authenticity – Unlike many politicians, Shah’s personal history as a rapper and engineer shows that he is relatable and genuine.
Anti-Corruption Credibility – Shah has consistently fought corruption during his mayoral term, earning trust from citizens tired of dishonest practices.
Youth-Centered Policies – His focus on modern solutions, digital engagement, and urban development resonates with younger voters who want progress.
Balanced Leadership – Even during violent protests, Shah urged calm and constructive action, showing leadership and wisdom.
The Challenges Ahead
While Shah has strong support, leading Nepal would come with challenges. The country is politically divided, and tensions remain high after the recent upheaval. Furthermore, transitioning from a city mayor to a national leader requires navigating complex government structures, managing international relations, and addressing long-standing economic issues.
Nonetheless, Shah’s independent status and fresh perspective may give him an advantage. Many citizens feel that traditional political parties have failed to meet public expectations, creating an opportunity for a new type of leadership.
The Bigger Picture: Nepal at a Crossroads
Nepal is at a critical moment in its history. Protests have shown that citizens—especially youth—demand transparency, fairness, and accountability. Economic difficulties, rising corruption, and restricted freedoms have fueled dissatisfaction. The future of the nation depends on whether leaders can listen to the public and provide transformative solutions.
Balen Shah represents a potential turning point. His rise reflects not only a personal journey from rapper to politician but also the growing power and influence of Generation Z in shaping the country’s future.
As Nepal recovers from the unrest, many eyes are on Shah. Will he maintain his independent approach, or will he take on a national political role? His next steps could define the country’s path toward stability, growth, and inclusivity.
What is clear is that the youth of Nepal have found a leader who speaks to their hopes and frustrations. In times of crisis, leaders like Shah can bridge the gap between tradition and innovation, offering a vision that inspires citizens to rebuild and dream again.
For now, the nation watches and waits. The story of Balen Shah reminds Nepal and the world that change is possible, especially when new generations rise to meet the challenges of their time.
