Australia Grieves Loss of Pakistani Guard: Hero Honored After Sydney Attack

Tahir, a Pakistani security guard who would have turned 31 on Wednesday, met a tragic fate on his first day at work. He was among the six victims who lost their lives earlier this month during a stabbing rampage at a bustling mall in Bondi, a picturesque suburb in Sydney.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid tribute to Tahir, hailing him as a hero for his brave efforts to thwart the attacker. Albanese's remarks were delivered on Friday at a funeral attended by hundreds of mourners.

During the ceremony, held outside the Baitul Huda mosque, a banner displaying the message "Love for all - hatred for none" served as a poignant backdrop. Tahir, who had sought refuge in Australia from Pakistan, was a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community.

Another security guard, Muhammad Taha, who was injured while trying to stop the attacker, attended the funeral in a wheelchair. Recounting their last moments together, Taha revealed that Tahir's final words were a call to action as they rushed towards the scene of the attack.

Tahir's brother, Mudasar Bashir, expressed disbelief and profound loss, noting that they had spoken the evening before the tragic incident, promising to reconnect the following day. Bashir shared sentiments of pride in his brother's actions, reflecting on the Islamic principle that saving even one life is akin to saving humanity in its entirety.

The perpetrator of the heinous act, Joel Cauchi, a 40-year-old grappling with mental health issues, claimed the lives of five women and Tahir before being fatally shot by police on April 13th.
