An intense heatwave has engulfed Australia, coinciding with the Australia Day celebrations on January 26, 2026, prompting urgent warnings across the nation. Temperatures are predicted to soar to hazardous levels, particularly in southern regions such as Victoria and South Australia, where forecasts indicate highs exceeding 40°C.
On Sunday, South Australia reported a staggering 48.5°C, triggering fire danger alerts across several areas. Officials have raised alarms regarding public safety, resulting in the cancellation of a number of Australia Day festivities. In Adelaide, a scheduled parade and fireworks display were scrapped due to the extreme heat, with organizers stressing safety essentials despite the regrets.
Warnings have been issued by the Bureau of Meteorology across Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, Northern Territory, and the Australian Capital Territory. Many of these alerts will persist until Wednesday, underscoring the continued severity of these weather conditions.
Tim Wiebusch, the emergency management commissioner for Victoria, remarked that conditions this severe haven't been observed in nearly two decades, advising the public to heed the warnings and recalling the dangerous weather linked to the catastrophic bushfires of 2009.
This heatwave also elevates the risk of fires, especially in parts of South Australia and southwestern Victoria, where hot, dry weather coupled with strong winds has exacerbated wildfire threats. Firefighters are currently grappling with multiple blazes in Victoria, leading to evacuations and jeopardizing properties.
The extreme temperatures have impacted the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne, with player Jannik Sinner suffering cramps during a match, resulting in a temporary halt to the games to safeguard players from the sweltering heat. Spectators have been advised to remain cautious amid the soaring temperatures.
Meanwhile, Western Australia is dealing with the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Luana, which impacted local homes and resorts before weakening as it progressed inland.
Authorities continue to recommend that individuals stay indoors in cooler settings such as homes, libraries, community hubs, or shopping centers. Residents are also urged to keep windows and curtains closed to maintain cooler indoor temperatures during this extreme heatwave.
