The 4th AFC Grassroots Football Conference officially began on Tuesday, bringing together football leaders, experts, and officials from across Asia to discuss the future of football development on the continent.
The event, organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), focuses on creating stronger foundations for the sport at the grassroots level and aims to shape a new chapter in Asian football growth.
This year’s conference is being held under the theme “Grassroots Football in Asia: The Next Chapter.” The three-day event highlights the importance of nurturing young talent, promoting inclusivity, and developing football communities across all levels.
The conference opened with the AFC Special Awards, which recognized individuals and organizations that have made exceptional contributions to the development of both grassroots and youth football. These awards celebrated the efforts of coaches, volunteers, and administrators who have helped expand access to football in their local communities.
During the opening ceremony, AFC officials emphasized the crucial role of grassroots football in shaping future stars and sustaining the sport’s growth. The AFC Special Awards paid tribute to those working behind the scenes—teachers, coaches, and mentors—whose dedication has helped thousands of young players pursue their passion for the game.
The recognition serves as a reminder that the success of Asian football depends not only on elite competition but also on continuous investment in youth programs, community outreach, and long-term player development.
Over the course of the three-day conference, participants from AFC Member Associations (MAs) will have the opportunity to learn from international experts. Representatives from FIFA and UEFA are among the key speakers, sharing insights into advancing participation, inclusion, and sustainability in grassroots football.
The conference will include interactive sessions and presentations on global best practices. These discussions are expected to inspire new approaches that can be adapted to local contexts across Asia, helping countries strengthen their football ecosystems from the ground up.
One of the main highlights of the opening day was the keynote speech by AFC Technical Director Andy Roxburgh. In his address, Roxburgh outlined the latest global trends shaping grassroots football and provided an overview of the direction that Asian football is expected to take in the coming years.
He emphasized the need for strong coaching education, better youth engagement, and greater inclusion of girls and marginalized communities in football programs. His address set the tone for the days ahead, encouraging participants to adopt innovative ideas and collaboration.
The remaining days of the conference will feature a series of interactive workshops, discussions, and case studies on the challenges and opportunities facing grassroots football in Asia. Sessions will focus on coaching methods, talent identification, and strategies to ensure that football remains accessible to all.
Delegates will also explore how technology, community partnerships, and sustainable initiatives can help strengthen football’s presence in schools, local clubs, and rural areas.
By the end of the conference, AFC officials hope to establish a clearer roadmap for the next phase of football development in Asia. The focus will be on increasing participation, improving facilities, and ensuring that every child who wishes to play football has the opportunity to do so.
The 4th AFC Grassroots Football Conference stands as a symbol of the Confederation’s long-term vision—making football a unifying, inclusive, and accessible sport that continues to grow at every level across the continent.
