Tel Aviv: Israeli scientists have made an extraordinary discovery, unveiling a new species of flea preserved in ancient amber. This remarkable find provides a rare window into the distant past, around 99 million years ago, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth alongside a diverse range of insects.
Led by Dolav Fabrikant from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Tanya (Tatiana) Novoselsky from the Steinhardt Museum of Natural History at Tel Aviv University, the study has been published in the prestigious Israel Journal of Entomology.
Named Miropictopallium coloradmonens, this flea distinguishes itself from its ancient counterparts with its vibrant and unique coloration. While most insects preserved in amber typically exhibit dull, yellowish-brown tones, this flea showcases striking colors that likely served as a form of defense against predators, akin to a natural superhero cape.

"The new insect enriches our understanding of the present world by providing insights into a significant transitional era in the history of life on land. Its era was marked by a surge in biological diversity and the beginning of what would become modern ecosystems," stated Fabrikant.
The discovery of Miropictopallium coloradmonens was made possible by a piece of amber that emerged at a public sale, shedding light not only on scientific advancements but also on the commercial pathways of ancient artifacts. This flea's presence in Myanmar amber raises inquiries about its historical range and distribution, hinting at a broader comprehension of prehistoric ecosystems.
The mid-Cretaceous period, characterized by hot and humid conditions, witnessed an explosion in insect diversity. This era provided fertile ground for the evolution of numerous species, including the colorful Miropictopallium coloradmonens.
However, as climates shifted and competition heightened, many of these species vanished, leaving behind only traces preserved in amber for future generations to uncover.
Amber, a fossilized tree resin, serves as an exceptional medium for preserving organisms due to its unique properties. Originating from resin exuded by certain trees, such as conifers, amber can trap small organisms like insects, spiders, or even small vertebrates as it flows from the tree in response to injury or disease.
Over time, the resin hardens into amber, a process that can take millions of years as volatile components evaporate, leaving behind a solid structure. Additionally, the resin's antimicrobial properties inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi, preserving organic matter encased within it.
"This newly discovered insect opens a fascinating chapter on flea evolution and offers fresh perspectives on life during the mid-Cretaceous period," remarked Novoselsky.
