Dubai: At least 10 people lost their lives, and 259 others were injured in 254 road accidents involving e-scooters and bicycles in Dubai this year, according to a report released by Dubai Police on Monday.
Among the injured, 17 people suffered serious injuries, 133 had moderate injuries, and 109 sustained minor injuries. These alarming numbers have led Dubai Police and the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to launch joint safety campaigns to raise awareness and ensure safer roads for cyclists and e-scooter riders in the city.
Safety Campaigns in Key Areas
Authorities are focusing on improving safety in high-risk areas such as:
Dubai Marina
Al Barsha
Al Riqa
Al Muraqqabat
Al Satwa
Khalid Bin Al Waleed Street
Al Karama
Importance of Road Safety
Major General Saif Mehir Al Mazrouei, Director of the General Traffic Department at Dubai Police, stressed that all road users – drivers, passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians – must respect traffic rules to protect lives. He highlighted the dangers of reckless driving and the need for proper enforcement of road safety laws.

Rules for Cyclists and E-Scooter Riders
As part of the campaign, authorities are educating riders about safe riding practices, including:
Using designated cycling and e-scooter lanes
Wearing helmets that meet safety standards
Using reflective vests for better visibility
Ensuring e-scooters and bicycles have functional brakes, front white lights, and red rear lights
Fines and Penalties for Violations
To enforce safety measures, Dubai Police and the RTA have introduced fines for those who break the rules:
Riding outside designated lanes or on roads with speed limits above 60 km/h – Dh300 fine
Reckless riding or parking on pedestrian or jogging paths – Fine between Dh200 and Dh300
Riding without a valid driving permit or using an expired one – Dh200 fine
Investments in Infrastructure for Safer Roads
Hussein Al Banna, Executive Director of the Traffic and Roads Agency at the RTA, said that Dubai is investing in better infrastructure to make the city more bike-friendly. Some key initiatives include:
Expanding cycling and shared lanes
Introducing digital permits for e-scooter users
Developing improved safety standards
Al Banna also highlighted that RTA organised over 80 awareness events in 2024, reaching nearly 10,000 people in high-traffic areas like Jumeirah Beach, Dubai Water Canal, and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard.
Dubai’s Vision for a Safer, Greener Future
Dubai’s goal is to become a smart and sustainable city by promoting eco-friendly mobility options while ensuring strict safety measures. The combined efforts of better infrastructure, digital regulations, and public awareness campaigns will help make Dubai a safer and more sustainable place for e-scooter and bicycle users.
Authorities urge all road users to follow the rules and prioritize safety to prevent further accidents.
