Dubai-based Nakheel recently marked the completion of the 3D printing process for the Al Furjan Hills project within an impressive 20 days from the commencement of construction. The Planning and Development Department, Trakhees, which serves as the regulatory body of the Ports, Customs, and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC), granted the first license for construction using 3D printing technology for buildings to Nakheel in December 2023.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman of the Ports, Customs, and Free Zone Corporation, expressed the commitment to implementing Decree No. (24) of 2021, regulating 3D printing in Dubai's construction sector. The aim is to foster economic growth, environmental sustainability, and urban development by embracing innovative solutions. He highlighted the strategic collaboration with real estate developers like Nakheel to strengthen Dubai's global position in construction and urban development.
Bin Sulayem emphasized Trakhees' role in promoting 3D printing technology in construction projects, aligning with Dubai's economic goals outlined in the Dubai Economic Agenda D33. The department aims to support the target of having 25% of buildings constructed using 3D printing technology by 2030.
In addition to issuing permits, Trakhees is actively working to ensure regulatory compliance and support Dubai's strategic goals. Abdullah Belhoul, CEO of the Department Planning and Development at Trakhees, PCFC, highlighted the revolutionary impact of 3D printing technology in providing architects with opportunities to create structures quickly and precisely, thereby opening new horizons for architectural engineering in Dubai.
Belhoul emphasized the cost and time benefits of 3D printing, noting an 80% reduction in labor costs and a 60% shorter duration for construction projects compared to traditional methods. This not only accelerates the construction process but also contributes to meeting the increasing demands of urban development in Dubai.
Trakhees is actively collaborating with stakeholders to integrate 3D printing technology into the 'Dubai Building Code.' This ensures that building designs comply with approved regulations and technical standards, aligning with global advancements in the construction field. The objective is to seamlessly integrate modern technology and regulatory procedures, facilitating the implementation of construction projects using advanced techniques that adhere to global standards
