Woman in US arrested as baby dies in her bed: "I did it again."

In a tragic incident in Muncie, Indiana, a 21-year-old woman named Aaliyah Lykins was arrested after her newborn daughter, Addilynn, died while sleeping in bed with her. This marks the second time in four years that a child of Lykins has tragically passed away under similar circumstances. According to reports from the New York Post, emergency responders were called to the scene in October last year, where Lykins allegedly exclaimed, "Oh no, I did it again," upon their arrival.

The toddler, Addilynn, was pronounced dead at the hospital, with authorities attributing her death to co-sleeping. It was reported that Lykins fell asleep while breastfeeding her two-week-old baby girl, leading to the infant's demise. A court affidavit filed on February 15 described the child as being found "limp, with no signs of respiration," highlighting the grave consequences of co-sleeping.

This tragic incident is particularly poignant as Lykins had a prior experience of losing a child under similar circumstances. Nearly four years ago, her two-month-old son, Aiden, also died during co-sleeping. In both instances, Lykins acknowledged the dangers of co-sleeping, expressing regret and recognizing that her actions were wrong. Despite this acknowledgment, charges were never filed against her in 2020 following Aiden's death.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises against co-sleeping with infants, emphasizing the importance of having newborns sleep in the same room as their parents but in a separate sleep space. Co-sleeping has been associated with an increased risk of accidental suffocation or strangulation for infants, making it a practice that is strongly discouraged by health experts.

The tragic loss of Addilynn serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of co-sleeping and the devastating consequences it can have. It underscores the importance of adhering to safe sleep practices recommended by health authorities to protect the well-being of infants and prevent avoidable tragedies. As the community mourns the loss of yet another innocent life, it is essential for parents to prioritize the safety of their children and take proactive measures to create a safe sleep environment conducive to their health and well-being.
