Troy Philipp B. confessed during the first day of his trial in the southern town of Kempten, Germany, to the rape and murder of a 21-year-old American tourist near Neuschwanstein Castle. Facing charges including murder and attempted murder, B. admitted to the incomprehensible act, according to his lawyer, Philip Mueller.
The incident occurred last year when two American women, aged 21 and 22, were hiking in the Neuschwanstein area after a European trip. B. engaged with them after a slip on the trail, offering to take them to a nearby viewing point. At a secluded spot, B., then 30, allegedly attacked the 21-year-old, raping and strangling her, while her friend was pushed down a steep slope.
During the assault, B. filmed the act and was interrupted by hikers who stumbled upon the crime scene. In an attempt to flee, he pushed the unconscious rape victim over the same ledge. The 21-year-old sustained serious injuries and later died in the hospital, while the 22-year-old survived with injuries.
B.'s lawyer argued that the accused hadn't planned the attack but acknowledged the potential danger to the victim. Despite this, B. left her behind. The accused expressed deep shame and a desire to apologize to the victim's family.
In addition to the charges related to the assault, B. confessed to possessing child pornography discovered during the investigation. The trial is scheduled to run until March 13, and B. faces potential life imprisonment if convicted.
