US Citizen Hijacks Plane in Belize, Killed After Stabbing

The man, named Akinyela Sawa Taylor, used a knife to threaten people on the plane. He told the pilot to take him out of the country. The plane was flying between the northern part of Belize and the capital, Belize City, when the attack happened. The plane started to run low on fuel while flying in the air.

Taylor hurt three people, including the pilot. A passenger on the plane had a gun and shot Taylor while the plane was landing near Belize City. Both the passenger and Taylor were taken to the hospital, but Taylor died from the gunshot wound.

It’s still not clear how Taylor brought a knife onto the plane because smaller airports in Belize don’t have strict security checks. The police said Taylor had been stopped from entering Belize a few days before, but no one knows how he got to the airport in Corozal to board the plane. The plane was supposed to fly a short distance from Corozal, which is close to the Mexican border, to San Pedro, an island off Belize's coast.

The police in Belize are now working with the U.S. embassy to investigate the situation. The embassy said it does not yet know why Taylor did this or what his background was.
