The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia have both said that recent news reports about them planning a new military attack in Yemen with the United States are not true.
Some media outlets had reported that Yemeni fighters were planning to attack areas along the Red Sea coast that are controlled by the Houthi group. These reports also claimed that the UAE had talked to US officials about this plan. But officials from both Saudi Arabia and the UAE said these claims are false.
A top official from the UAE called the reports “untrue” and “misleading.” Lana Nusseibeh, a senior UAE official for political affairs, said that among all the false stories going around, this one is the most misleading of the week.

The Wall Street Journal had reported that the US bombings of Houthi targets could be followed by a ground attack from Yemeni fighters. Bloomberg also reported that some Yemeni groups were talking with the US and Gulf countries about a possible land attack.
In the past, the UAE and Saudi Arabia were part of a military group that started fighting in Yemen in 2015. They supported the Yemeni government, which was pushed out by the Houthis. The Houthis had taken over the capital city, Sana’a, in 2014.
The UAE began pulling most of its forces out of Yemen in 2019. By 2022, the major fighting had mostly stopped after a truce was agreed upon. The Houthis still control large parts of the country and many people who live there.
The Houthis are linked with Iran and are strongly against Israel. In November 2023, they began attacking ships in the Red Sea. They said they were doing this to support the people of Palestine in the war in Gaza.
In response, US President Donald Trump ordered air strikes against the Houthis in March. He warned the group that if they did not stop attacking ships, they would face serious consequences.
The Houthis have a long history of fighting in Yemen. They fought several wars with the Yemeni government between 2003 and 2009. Since 2015, they have faced years of air attacks from the Saudi-led coalition, but the front lines of the war have not changed much.
The Red Sea coast, where this reported new attack was supposed to happen, was also the site of a major battle in the past. Coalition forces had once tried to take control of Hudaydah, the biggest port held by the Houthis, but they failed.
During the war, the coalition had to deal with many challenges. Different Yemeni groups that were supposed to be on the same side often disagreed with each other. Saudi Arabia and the UAE also supported different groups within Yemen, which made things more difficult.
In 2022, Saudi Arabia also started peace talks and agreed to a truce in Yemen. This happened not long before Saudi Arabia and Iran began to improve their diplomatic relationship.
