UAE Residents Urged: Report Mosquito Sightings, Breeding Sites to Combat Increase

The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCAE) is urging residents to be vigilant and report any instances of mosquito sightings or potential breeding sites as part of heightened efforts to combat the increasing presence of mosquitoes. Othaibah Saeed Al Qaydi, the director of the Municipal Affairs Department at the ministry, noted a surge in reports following heavy rains in mid-April and early May, attributing the rise to climate change and its impact on mosquito behavior.

Al Qaydi emphasized the role of climate change in altering mosquito distribution and breeding patterns, stating that changes in precipitation and warmer temperatures extend the breeding season. With the UAE experiencing a mild wet season in recent months, conducive conditions for mosquito proliferation have emerged, particularly in areas with stagnant water such as ponds, puddles, and improperly drained containers.

To mitigate the risk of mosquito-borne diseases, residents are advised to take preventive measures, including reporting stagnant water areas to the ministry's hotline (8003050) and using mosquito repellents. Protective clothing covering exposed skin areas is also recommended. Additionally, the installation of anti-mosquito screens, nets, and traps can help reduce mosquito populations.

Community participation is essential in mosquito control efforts, with residents encouraged to eliminate standing water around their homes and address potential breeding sites. The ministry employs advanced technology, including GIS mapping, sensors, and drones, to identify breeding grounds and assess environmental factors influencing mosquito spread. Predictive modeling techniques aid in forecasting mosquito population dynamics, guiding proactive interventions.

In line with its commitment to environmental safety, the ministry employs pesticides that are harmless to humans and animals, alongside silicone films, biological control, and physical methods to eliminate mosquito larvae. Thermal foggers, misting machines, and ULV sprayers are used to target adult mosquitoes without posing risks to humans or animals.

The UAE's anti-mosquito campaign, initiated in February 2022, will continue until May 2025, with a focus on addressing recent challenges exacerbated by heavy rainfall. Residents are advised to be vigilant and identify potential breeding hotspots, including discarded containers, construction sites, unused swimming pools, and clogged drains. By actively participating in mosquito control efforts, communities can contribute to a safer and healthier environment for all residents.
