UAE: Jebel Jais Records Near-Freezing Temperature at 3.4°C

For residents in the UAE seeking a break from the relatively mild winter conditions, Jebel Jais Mountain, the country's northernmost point, delivered an unexpected surprise on Sunday morning. Recording the lowest temperature since the beginning of winter, the mercury dipped to 3.4°C, marking a chilly turn of events.

Despite the delay in the onset of the sweater season, Jebel Jais brought with it a noteworthy 3.4°C on Sunday, promising residents in Ras Al Khaimah a taste of winter's chill in the desert.

Notably, an even icier temperature of 4.2ºC was registered at 5 am on the preceding Saturday morning (February 3) at Jebel Jais, surpassing Al Ain's earlier record of 5.3ºC in Raknah on January 10.

A significant aspect related to the changing climate is the commencement of the 'Scorpion Season,' a period known for its increased rainfall, as predicted by Ibrahim Al-Jarwan, a distinguished astronomer and member of the Arab Federation for Space and Astronomy. This season spans 40 days, starting around February 6 and concluding on March 17, featuring abundant rain and characterized by winds shifting between Northwest and Northeast.

Al-Jarwan anticipates winter freeze in the northern regions of the Arabian Island during the initial weeks of February, often referred to as the 'February frost.' This climatic phenomenon affects the residents of the Al Jouf region and the broader northern area.

Recent fluctuations in temperature in the UAE were attributed to the influence of a surface depression originating from the southwest, combined with the presence of humid southeasterly winds. This weather pattern led to rains accompanied by lightning across several parts of the country, including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, and Umm Al Quwain, with additional rainfall recorded in Khor Fakkan.

In contrast to previous years, the UAE has experienced a milder winter, with higher average temperatures in December and reduced rainfall, as noted by experts from the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM). This deviation from historical weather patterns adds to the unique meteorological dynamics observed in the region.
