UAE: Irrational A 23-year-old gives a 66-year-old cancer sufferer fresh life.

Fatima Ali, a resident of Abu Dhabi, was battling life-threatening conditions like advanced liver cirrhosis and cancer. Her only hope for survival was a liver transplant. Despite being on a waitlist, she faced disappointment three times as the potential donors' livers didn't match due to various medical reasons. However, just when she was losing hope, she received a life-changing phone call.

In March, the Burjeel Transplant Office at Burjeel Medical City in Abu Dhabi informed Fatima about a 23-year-old Indian man who had suffered a traumatic brain injury, resulting in severe brain stem dysfunction and ultimately brain death. The deceased's family, with a heavy heart, consented to organ donation through the National Centre for Regulating Donation and Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues. Fatima was overwhelmed with gratitude for the selfless decision of the donor's family.

Having battled liver cirrhosis and cancer for two years, Fatima underwent a liver transplantation at Burjeel Medical City, becoming the first patient to undergo such a procedure at the facility. Despite initial apprehensions about the surgery's risks and implications, Fatima was reassured by Dr. Rehan Saif, the director of the Burjeel Abdominal Multi-Organ Transplant Programme, who explained the necessity and success rate of the procedure.

Dr. Saif and his team embarked on the challenging surgery, which was complicated by the severity of Fatima's condition, including portal hypertension, posing a risk of severe bleeding during liver removal. However, the surgery was successfully completed with minimal blood loss, and Fatima received a healthy functioning liver graft.

Fatima's recovery journey has been promising, with appropriate pain management and rehabilitation measures in place to ensure her well-being. The successful outcome of the procedure was attributed to the collaborative efforts of the medical team, including specialists in gastrointestinal surgery, anesthesia, critical care medicine, and intensive care.

Fatima's story exemplifies the transformative impact of organ donation and transplantation in saving lives and offering hope to those battling life-threatening illnesses. Through the selfless act of organ donation and the expertise of medical professionals, Fatima has been given a new lease on life, allowing her to look forward to a brighter and healthier future.
