The Palestinian militant group Hamas is navigating a crucial transition following the recent death of its leader, Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli forces in Gaza this week. This event marks the second loss of a top leader for Hamas in less than three months, as Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Iran back in July.
As the group seeks a new political leader, experts suggest that Hamas will likely choose someone based outside Gaza. In the meantime, Sinwar's brother, Mohammad Sinwar, is expected to take on a more significant role in directing the ongoing conflict against Israel from within the territory.

Khalil Al-Hayya, serving as Sinwar's deputy and Hamas' chief negotiator, is known for his assertive stance and maintains close ties with Iran, which may bolster his candidacy. Another possible successor is Khaled Meshaal, a former leader of Hamas and a relatively moderate figure, although his prospects are complicated by previous tensions with Tehran. Mohammad Darwish, the chairman of the Shura Council, is a lesser-known candidate but remains in contention for the top position within the group.
Experts anticipate that Hamas will remain firm on its core demands in future ceasefire negotiations, which include the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and an end to the ongoing conflict. However, there might be some flexibility on specific conditions, such as potential prisoner exchanges. The decision on the new leadership will be made by the Shura Council, Hamas' highest decision-making body, which will consider the perspectives of all Hamas members, including those in the Gaza Strip, West Bank, Israeli prisons, and the Palestinian diaspora.
In light of more than a year of intense Israeli military action that has decimated Hamas forces and led to the deaths of numerous senior figures both inside and outside Gaza, the future trajectory of the Islamist group remains uncertain following this significant leadership loss.
Hamas, founded in 1987, is affiliated with the Sunni Islamist Muslim Brotherhood movement and typically makes decisions through consensus within its institutional frameworks. With Yahya Sinwar's death, leadership within Gaza has temporarily shifted to Khalil Al-Hayya, who is based in Qatar. However, the ongoing conflict and difficulties in communication may limit Hayya's ability to maintain close daily contact with the operatives on the ground. This situation may lead to the armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, taking a more prominent role in steering the group's actions.
