On Monday, it was announced that the Taliban has suspended all polio vaccination campaigns in Afghanistan. This decision was communicated to agencies only days before the scheduled September immunization campaign, with no official reason given for the suspension.

Representatives from the Taliban-led government have not yet provided any comments regarding the suspension. This development comes at a critical time as Afghanistan and Pakistan are the last two countries in the world where polio remains endemic, posing ongoing challenges to global eradication efforts.
Despite concerted efforts by the polio eradication program in Afghanistan, the final phase of achieving a polio-free status has encountered substantial obstacles. Over the past three years, the number of polio cases in the country has increased, with the virus spreading to provinces that had previously been free of the disease for extended periods.
UNICEF, in partnership with the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), the World Health Organization (WHO), and various non-governmental organizations, has been working through the Emergency Operating Centre (EOC) to explore innovative methods to ensure comprehensive vaccine coverage. These efforts included building trust and increasing demand for vaccination campaigns among local populations.
So far, 16 Afghan provinces have been affected by polio, with a total of 56 cases of Wild Poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) reported. The southern region of Afghanistan has been particularly hard-hit, accounting for 66 percent of the country’s total polio cases in 2020.
The polio program has managed to maintain 100% adequacy of vaccine supplies for all related activities, including immunization campaigns and case responses. Vaccines such as mOPV2, mOPV1, and tOPV have been successfully introduced for case response campaigns, thanks to capacity building in vaccine management and accountability.
Even during the Covid-19 pandemic, the polio program conducted three National Immunisation Days, two Sub-National Immunisation Days, and three Case Response Campaigns across Afghanistan. However, the recent suspension by the Taliban introduces uncertainty into future vaccination efforts, raising concerns about the continued battle to eliminate polio in the country.
The halt in vaccination campaigns presents a significant setback, casting doubt on the progress made and potentially exacerbating the challenges faced in eradicating the disease.
