Supreme Court bans tiger safaris in Jim Corbett core areas.

Photo-Outlook India

The Supreme Court's recent ruling has brought about a significant change in the tourism landscape of Uttarakhand's Jim Corbett National Park. With the ban on tiger safaris within the park's core areas, tourists will now only be allowed to explore the peripheral and buffer zones surrounding the reserve. This decision, aimed at safeguarding the natural habitat of the region's majestic tigers, reflects the court's commitment to mitigating the adverse effects of tourism on the core forest areas.

Moreover, while permitting tiger safaris in the peripheral and buffer zones, the court has imposed strict conditions to ensure the protection of wildlife and the environment. This move seeks to strike a delicate balance between promoting tourism and preserving the integrity of the sensitive ecosystems within the national park.

The Supreme Court's intervention extends beyond the ban on tiger safaris, addressing broader environmental concerns within the Tiger Reserve. The court has expressed strong disapproval of illegal construction and tree felling activities within the Corbett Tiger Reserve, highlighting the gravity of environmental damage caused by such actions.

To address these issues, the court has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate allegations of collusion between politicians and forest officials. Additionally, a committee appointed by the Supreme Court will evaluate the concept of safaris within the Tiger Reserve and impose necessary conditions to ensure ecological conservation and responsible tourism.

This ruling reflects a broader shift in wildlife conservation approaches, with the court prioritizing the well-being of animals over tourism interests. By dismissing proposals for tiger safaris within national parks and emphasizing the preservation of natural habitats, the Supreme Court is advocating for a more sustainable and ecologically responsible approach to conservation.
