Sudan has taken the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing it of helping Sudan's paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), in the country's ongoing civil war.
Sudan claims that the UAE has been providing military, financial, and political support to the RSF, which has been accused of committing genocide in West Darfur. The Sudanese government specifically says the UAE is responsible for aiding the killing of the Masalit community, a non-Arab ethnic group in the region.
UAE Denies the Allegations
In response, the UAE has strongly denied the accusations, calling the case a "cynical publicity stunt." The Emirati government said it would push for the case to be dismissed immediately.

A UAE official, who did not reveal their name, said Sudan's allegations had "no legal or factual basis" and claimed the Sudanese government was only trying to shift blame for the ongoing war.
War Crimes and Humanitarian Crisis
The war in Sudan started in April 2023, and since then, both the RSF and the Sudanese army have been accused of committing atrocities. However, the RSF has been singled out for carrying out genocide in Darfur, particularly targeting non-Arab groups.
UN experts, who have been monitoring the arms embargo in Darfur, previously said there were credible reports of the UAE smuggling weapons to the RSF through Chad.
Sudan Demands Compensation
In its submission to the ICJ, Sudan stated:
"The United Arab Emirates fuels the rebellion and supports the militia that has committed genocide in West Darfur. The UAE must provide full compensation to the victims of the war."
Although the ICJ’s ruling will not be legally binding, it is expected to carry significant political weight.
Thousands Killed, Millions Displaced
The nearly two-year-long war has had a devastating impact on Sudan. More than ten million people have been displaced, and tens of thousands have lost their lives. The situation has created one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.
Just this week, heavy shelling on a camp for displaced people in North Darfur led to a massive loss of life. On Tuesday evening, a crowded market in Abu Shouk, a camp near the city of el-Fasher, was attacked for about two hours, leaving dozens feared dead.
As the conflict continues, the world watches to see what decision the ICJ will make regarding Sudan’s case against the UAE.
