On the second day of the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open, some top players showed impressive performances. 17-year-old Japanese talent Wakana Sonobe won her match in straight sets against Cristina Bucsa, securing a place in the Round of 32. Sonobe, who won the girls’ singles title at the Australian Open last week, had already defeated Hailey Baptiste in the first qualifying round. On Sunday, Sonobe played against Bucsa on Stadium Court and dominated the match. She won the first set 6-3 and then won the second set 6-3 to seal the win. Sonobe will now face China’s Yue Yuan in the next round.

Kartal, who won her first WTA title at the Jasmin Open in Tunisia last September, won the first set 6-1 easily. Uchijima made a comeback in the second set, but Kartal finished the match strong with a 6-1, 6-4 victory. Kartal will play against Katie Volynets, who won her match 7-6, 6-3 against Daria Saville.

Sofia Kenin, the 2020 Australian Open champion, also won in straight sets. She faced Veronika Kudermetova, and after a tight first set that was decided by a tie-break, Kenin took control in the second set and won 7-6, 6-2. Kenin will meet Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the next round.

Renata Zarazua also had a strong performance, beating Zeynep Sonmez 6-1, 6-2, and now faces Magda Linette.

The Main Draw singles competition will start on Monday, and the doubles tournament will begin as well. Jelena Ostapenko and Ellen Perez will play against Linda Noskova and Yulia Putintseva, while Sofia Kenin and Magda Linette will take on Laura Samson and Marketa Vondrousova.
