Silvia Pinal, the famous Mexican actress, has passed away at the age of 93. She was one of the most important figures in Mexico’s Golden Age of Cinema. The news of her death was shared on social media by Claudia Curiel de Icaza, Mexico’s culture secretary, and the Asociación Nacional de Intérpretes. Pinal had been in the hospital recently for a urinary infection.

Silvia Pinal’s acting career lasted over 70 years. She became internationally famous for her roles in three films directed by the famous Spanish director Luis Buñuel. These films were made in the 1960s and are still considered some of the best films in history. The first film was Viridiana (1961), in which she played a young woman who questions her faith. This movie won the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. However, it was banned in Spain and Mexico because of its criticism of the Catholic Church. Silvia Pinal managed to bring a copy of the film back to Mexico after visiting France, and it was shown in private screenings there.

In another film called The Exterminating Angel (1962), Pinal played one of the guests at a dinner party. In this film, the guests can’t leave the mansion, no matter how hard they try. Pinal once said that Buñuel, the director, had created a kind of reality TV show with this film, because the characters were trapped in one room just like people in reality TV shows.

In Simon of the Desert (1965), Pinal’s character tries to tempt a saint, who lives alone on top of a pillar, to leave his life of isolation. Silvia Pinal's roles in these films made her a star and showed her talent as an actress.

Before becoming famous in films, Pinal worked in the theater in the late 1940s. She worked with the director Rafael Banquells, who became her first husband. In 1950, she began acting in films and got big roles in The King of the Neighborhood and The Doorman, where she worked alongside famous Mexican actors like Germán Valdés (also known as Tin-Tan) and Mario Moreno (known as Cantinflas). She also worked with Pedro Infante, one of Mexico's most famous actors, in Un Rincón Cerca del Cielo (1952).

Besides her famous work in Mexican films, Pinal also worked in Hollywood. She appeared in movies like Guns for San Sebastian (1968), which starred Anthony Quinn and Charles Bronson, and Shark (1969), which starred Burt Reynolds. However, her most famous work remains in Mexican cinema.

In addition to acting in films, Silvia Pinal became very well-known on television. From 1986 to 2007, she hosted and produced a show called Mujer, Casos de la Vida Real, which was very popular in Latin America. The show told real-life stories sent by viewers, and it dealt with important social issues such as domestic violence, LGBT discrimination, and women’s rights. These topics were often not talked about in Mexican television at the time.

Silvia Pinal was also a major figure in musical theater in Mexico. She starred in and produced Mexican versions of Broadway musicals like Hello, Dolly!, A Chorus Line, and Cats. She even owned several theaters in Mexico City.

Later in life, Pinal also worked in politics. She served as a lawmaker in the early 1990s and became the head of the Mexican actors’ union, ANDA, from 2010 to 2014. Even though she had mostly stopped acting by then, she continued to influence Mexican culture.

Silvia Pinal was born on September 12, 1931, in Sonora, Mexico. She took her stepfather’s last name, Luis G. Pinal, as a tribute to the man who raised her. Her mother worked in a seafood restaurant, and her real father, Moisés Pasquel, was an orchestra conductor. Silvia Pinal’s first three husbands were all in show business, and her children and grandchildren also became part of the entertainment world. Her daughter, Alejandra Guzmán, is a famous pop singer who has sold more than 30 million albums. The family’s many successes in entertainment have earned them the nickname “The Pinal Dynasty.”

Silvia Pinal’s passing is a huge loss for Mexico and the world of entertainment. Her incredible work in film, television, and theater has left a lasting impact on generations of people. Silvia Pinal will always be remembered as one of the greatest actresses in Mexican history.
