His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum recently visited several important projects run by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). This visit follows the vision and guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Their goal is to make Dubai a world leader in clean energy and the green economy.

During his visit, His Highness was welcomed by His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, who is the Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, along with other top DEWA officials. The tour began at DEWA’s Sustainability and Innovation Centre, located inside the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. This solar park is the largest single-site solar project in the world and was built using the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model.

His Highness received a detailed explanation from HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer about DEWA’s latest work and successes. These included new projects in clean energy, artificial intelligence, and technologies related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Some of the important projects mentioned were:

  • The different phases of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park.

  • The pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant in Hatta, which is the first of its kind in the region.

  • Al Sheraa, DEWA’s new headquarters, which is famous for being the world’s tallest, largest, and smartest government building that produces more energy than it uses.

The briefing also highlighted that DEWA is doing extremely well worldwide, ranking first in 12 important performance areas. These achievements are helping Dubai reach its big goals, like the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050. The aim of these plans is to make sure that by 2050, all of Dubai’s energy will come from clean sources.

Right now, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park can produce 3,660 megawatts (MW) of electricity. DEWA is working on the sixth phase of the project using the latest solar panel technologies. The seventh phase will increase the park’s total planned production to 7,260 MW by 2030. This will push clean energy to 34% of Dubai’s total energy mix, which is much higher than the original 25% goal. This progress is expected to cut down carbon dioxide emissions by about eight million tonnes each year, making Dubai even stronger as a global leader in clean energy and sustainability.

The Solar Park also has DEWA’s Research and Development Centre and the Green Hydrogen Project. This Green Hydrogen Project is the first in the Middle East and North Africa to make green hydrogen using solar energy.

While touring the Sustainability and Innovation Centre, His Highness saw an interactive display that showed the newest developments in clean and renewable energy. The Centre is not just about research; it also focuses on teaching. It holds events, builds partnerships, and creates learning opportunities. It offers workshops, interactive exhibits, and hands-on activities to help the community learn more about clean energy. The Centre also helps students develop skills that match global standards and encourages them to consider careers in sustainability and the green economy.

His Highness also visited the Green Data Centre run by Moro Hub, which is part of Digital DEWA. This data centre is powered entirely by solar energy and has won two Guinness World Records for being the largest solar-powered data centre in the world. It helps Dubai promote eco-friendly practices and offers smart digital services that help reduce carbon emissions. This achievement further proves Dubai’s leading role in sustainability and innovation.
