Rescue teams combed the debris-laden banks of a river in central Japan on Monday, diligently searching for victims after severe flooding and landslides swept through the region, resulting in at least seven fatalities.
The flooding occurred over the weekend in the Noto Peninsula, an area still recovering from a devastating earthquake that struck in January. The river overflowed its banks, transforming into a muddy torrent that inundated roads and a remote village, leaving widespread destruction in its wake.
As the weather finally cleared, police and firefighters from across Japan joined local residents in the search efforts. Among them was the father of a 14-year-old girl who is one of seven individuals still unaccounted for. As of Monday afternoon, the Ishikawa prefecture reported that the death toll had risen to seven, with one person severely injured and eleven others suffering mild injuries.

The region was battered by relentless rainfall starting Saturday, with the city of Wajima recording over 540 millimeters of rain in just 72 hours—the highest continuous rainfall documented since records began. This deluge exacerbated the already precarious situation in an area still reeling from the effects of a magnitude-7.5 earthquake that struck on New Year’s Day. That earthquake caused widespread destruction, toppling buildings, triggering tsunami waves, and igniting major fires, resulting in at least 374 fatalities.
In a cruel twist, the floodwaters also inundated emergency housing that had been established for those displaced by the earlier earthquake. Shoichi Miyakoshi, a 76-year-old former sushi chef, expressed his despair, stating, "I have to start over, through another cold winter," after losing his wife in the devastating earthquake of 2007.
The situation remains dire as rescue operations continue, highlighting the challenges faced by communities striving to recover from multiple disasters.
