New UK Student Visa Rules Lead to 4% Decline in Indian Applications

Official statistics released on Thursday highlight a 4% decline in applications from Indian students to British universities. This comes amidst an ongoing review of the post-study work visa and newly imposed restrictions on bringing dependents for government-funded scholarships. While the overall international undergraduate applicants increased by 0.7%, Indian and Nigerian applicants led a downward trend following previous record highs.

UCAS figures indicate a drop to 8,770 applications from India, representing a 4% decrease compared to the previous year. Similarly, applications from Nigeria witnessed a significant decline of 46% to 1,590.

The decline is attributed to factors such as the ongoing review of the Graduate Route visa, which allows graduates to stay and gain work experience for at least two years after completing their degree. The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) has been commissioned by the Home Office to assess this post-study work visa, with Indian nationals forming the largest group benefiting from it.

Another contributing factor to the decrease is a recent clampdown on overseas students, limiting dependents' entry for all courses except postgraduate research and government-funded scholarships. This move, implemented last month, is likely influencing application trends.

Dr. Jo Saxton, Chief Executive at UCAS, acknowledges the decline in applications from mature students, particularly impacting subjects like nursing. However, she notes that these applicants often apply later in the cycle. Saxton encourages students still deciding on their higher education steps to utilize the extended application period until June 30, and subsequently through Clearing. The UCAS website offers support and guidance for informed decision-making about future educational choices.
