MS Dhoni Reveals He Texted Virat Kohli After 2022 Captaincy Dispute

Former Indian captain MS Dhoni has spoken about his bond with Virat Kohli, a relationship built over years of playing together. Back in January 2022, after India’s tour of South Africa, Kohli made the shocking decision to step down as the captain of the Indian Test team. At that time, many people had opinions on his decision, but very few actually reached out to him. Kohli later revealed that Dhoni was the only person who messaged him personally during those difficult days.

"Let me tell you one thing: when I left Test captaincy, I got a message from only one person, someone I had played with before. That was MS Dhoni. Many people have my number. On television, people give a lot of advice, they have plenty to say. But none of those people who had my number sent me a message," Kohli had shared in an interview.

Now, after more than two years, Dhoni has finally opened up about this gesture. During a recent public event, a fan asked him about his relationship with Kohli. In response, Dhoni admitted that while he is not the best at keeping in touch with people, he believes in reaching out when it truly matters.

"It's déjà vu. I was asked a similar question recently; you will see the answer during the IPL. I'm not great when it comes to being in touch with people, but yeah, certain times when someone needs you, you just drop in a message," Dhoni said in a video that has now gone viral.

Kohli, in a previous interview, had also reflected on how much that message from Dhoni meant to him. He spoke about the kind of mutual respect they shared, one built on honesty and trust.

"The respect and connection we have with each other is genuine, and it shows in moments like these. Neither of us has any insecurity. Neither does he [Dhoni] need anything from me, nor do I need anything from him. That is why our bond is so strong," Kohli had said.

He also pointed out how people often offer advice in public rather than reaching out personally, something he does not value.

"If you really want to help someone, you reach out to them privately. If you give suggestions in front of the world, it has no meaning to me. If it is for my improvement, you can talk to me one-on-one. That is what real support looks like," Kohli added.

His words highlighted his belief in sincerity and how actions speak louder than words. He emphasized that he lives his life with honesty and can see through people’s intentions.

For fans, this exchange between two of India’s greatest cricketers is a reminder of the strong bond they share. Despite their different personalities, Dhoni and Kohli have always respected each other.
