Meta Platforms, Inc., the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has announced that it will allow its artificial intelligence (AI) models to be utilized for military purposes. In a statement released on November 4, the company confirmed that government agencies and contractors focused on national security will gain access to its latest AI model, Llama 3. This initiative highlights Meta’s commitment to supporting the safety and security of the United States through collaborations with major defense and technology firms such as Lockheed Martin, IBM, Amazon, Microsoft, and Oracle.

Meta articulated that, as an American company, it recognizes the role it plays in upholding the entrepreneurial spirit and democratic values of the U.S. The company stated, “Meta wants to play its part to support the safety, security, and economic prosperity of America—and of its closest allies too.” The integration of Llama 3 into military applications aims to enhance logistics efficiency, track terrorist financing, and bolster cyber defense capabilities.
While Meta has a stringent "acceptable use policy" that prohibits the use of its AI models in military, nuclear, or espionage operations, Nick Clegg, Meta's president of global affairs, emphasized that the company now supports "responsible and ethical uses" of AI technology that align with U.S. interests and democratic values.
Meta’s move to partner with the military is not isolated; it follows reports suggesting that other AI firms, such as OpenAI, have also been working closely with the U.S. government. Speculation around OpenAI’s involvement with the military has been fueled by recent events, including a report indicating that Katrina Mulligan, OpenAI's national security advisor, attended a Taylor Swift concert in New Orleans alongside Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth. This gathering came amid discussions by the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), which cited access to OpenAI's technology as "essential" for its operational goals.
However, the military application of AI technology raises concerns about ethical implications and potential misuse. A report noted that Chinese military researchers had allegedly employed Meta’s AI models to create a defense-focused chatbot named ChatBIT, developed using the outdated Llama 2 model. In response to this incident, Meta stated that the use of its technology by the Chinese military was unauthorized and a violation of its acceptable use policy.
As Meta moves forward with its plans to support U.S. military operations through AI, it remains to be seen how this partnership will impact both national security and the broader conversation about the role of technology in warfare. The company’s recent actions underscore the growing intersection between advanced technology and military applications, as governments worldwide seek to leverage AI capabilities to enhance their defense strategies.
