In a tragic incident in Ottawa, Canada, six individuals, including four children, were fatally stabbed, allegedly by 19-year-old Febrio De-Zoysa, a Sri Lankan student. Ottawa Police Chief Eric Stubbs disclosed that the suspect used an "edged weapon" or "knife-like object." The victims, all Sri Lankan nationals who recently migrated to Canada, included a 35-year-old mother, a 7-year-old son, a 4-year-old daughter, a 2-year-old daughter, and a 2 1/2-month-old baby girl, along with a 40-year-old acquaintance of the family.

Upon arrival at the scene, police found the father outside the residence, urgently seeking assistance. The father sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized, though his condition was reported as non-life-threatening. Stubbs condemned the violence as "senseless," emphasizing the innocence of the victims. Sri Lanka's high commission in Canada has been in communication with relatives in Colombo.

De-Zoysa appeared briefly in court, where he was instructed not to communicate with the surviving father or other witnesses. The case was adjourned to March 13 to allow time for legal representation. Despite the swift arrest of the suspect, the incident has shocked the community, with neighbors expressing disbelief and sorrow.

The victims were identified as Darshani Banbaranayake Gama Walwwe Darshani Dilanthika Ekanyake, the mother, Inuka Wickramasinghe, the 7-year-old boy, Ashwini Wickramasinghe, the 4-year-old daughter, Rinyana Wickramasinghe, the 2-year-old daughter, Kelly Wickramasinghe, the 2 1/2-month-old baby girl, and Amarakoonmubiayansela Ge Gamini Amarakoon, aged 40.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe expressed shock and condolences, highlighting the devastating impact of the tragedy on the community. The incident, occurring in the Barrhaven area, prompted a swift police response, with assurances of no ongoing threat to public safety.

As investigations continue, the community grapples with the incomprehensible loss, mourning the lives cut short by this horrific act of violence. The aftermath of the tragedy underscores the importance of community support and resilience in the face of such unimaginable grief.
