Maritime Security Firm Reports Attack on Fuel Tanker in Red Sea with 2 Explosions

In Cairo, Egypt, a Marshall Islands-flagged liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker encountered two explosions while sailing off the coast of Yemen's port city of Hodeidah, marking the third attack on merchant vessels within 48 hours, British security firm Ambrey reported on Friday.

According to Ambrey, the crew of the vessel involved in this latest Red Sea incident was previously owned by a US entity. Meanwhile, United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKTMO) indicated that the Master of another merchant vessel in a nearby area reported an explosion off the vessel's starboard beam. Reuters was unable to immediately confirm whether the two reports were linked to the same ship.

Since mid-November, Iran-aligned Houthi militants in Yemen have launched drones and missiles against international commercial shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, purportedly in support of Palestinians during Israel's conflict in Gaza. These attacks have disrupted global shipping routes, compelling companies to take longer and more costly routes around the southern tip of Africa.

Fortunately, no damage or injuries to crew members were reported in the earlier attacks. Responding to these incidents, the United States and Britain have conducted strikes against Houthi targets.

Late Thursday, the US military disclosed that the Houthis fired two anti-ship ballistic missiles toward the Gulf of Aden and two missiles toward the Red Sea. However, no injuries or damage were reported to US or coalition ships. Early Friday, the US military's Central Command announced the destruction of nine anti-ship missiles and two drones in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen.
