Beijing, China: In a tragic incident, a knife attack in central China resulted in the deaths of eight individuals and injuries to one more, as reported by state media on Friday. The attack took place on Thursday morning in the city of Xiaogan, located in Hubei province, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
The assailant, a 53-year-old man identified by the surname Lu, had a documented history of mental illness treatment. The authorities confirmed that Lu is currently detained by the police, who are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the motive behind the brutal attack.
The lone injured victim is reported to have sustained non-life-threatening injuries, as per the state news agency Xinhua.
Mass violent crimes are relatively uncommon in China, largely due to the country's strict firearm regulations. However, recent years have witnessed a disturbing increase in knife-related attacks. This latest incident in Xiaogan is part of a series of similar violent episodes that have raised public safety concerns.
