West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, April 16, accusing him of having double standards when it comes to treating Muslims. Banerjee was speaking at a meeting with Muslim religious leaders and urged the Prime Minister not to put into action the "Waqf (Amendment) Act." She called the Act “atrocious” and warned that it would divide the country. She also asked the Prime Minister to control Union Home Minister Amit Shah, whom she blamed for "causing harm to the nation for his own political interests."
Banerjee said that the Waqf Amendment Act was not only "atrocious" but also "anti-federal," meaning it goes against the spirit of India's federal system where states have their own powers. She had previously said that the Act would not be implemented in West Bengal and advised religious leaders to directly reach out to President Droupadi Murmu and the Prime Minister to share their concerns.

She questioned the Prime Minister’s actions, saying, "When you go to Dubai, whose hospitality do you accept? When you visit Saudi Arabia, who do you greet?” Mamata said that the Prime Minister speaks differently in India and outside the country. She criticized this as a form of double standards and urged Modi to be more consistent in his actions, saying, "You should have some shame."
Mamata also pointed out that when the Prime Minister visits Arab countries, people do not call it "appeasement," so it should not be seen that way when she attends events of other religions. She added that the BJP-led central government had passed laws that hurt the people, and she promised to cancel these laws once the BJP is out of power. “Just wait for one more year. There will be a change in the government, and we will scrap all these laws,” she said.
Mamata also criticized leaders in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), such as Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar, and Chandrababu Naidu, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. She accused them of staying silent on the issue of the Waqf Act because they were focused on keeping their political power. She asked, “Why are Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu staying quiet? They are part of the NDA but are silent to protect their positions.”
Finally, Mamata Banerjee urged all parties within the opposition alliance INDIA to come together to fight against violence and promised that her government in Bengal would continue to work for communal harmony.
