Largest Russian air assault on Ukraine since invasion began.

In an unprecedented and devastating escalation of the conflict, Russia launched the largest air assault on Ukraine since the beginning of its full-scale invasion. The Ukrainian military reported that an overwhelming number of drones and missiles targeted locations across the country, resulting in a tragic toll of at least 31 lives lost and over 150 people injured.

The onslaught, characterized by its ferocity, commenced overnight into Friday, with strikes hitting various regions, including the capital Kyiv, the central city of Dnipro, the eastern city of Kharkiv, the southeastern port of Odesa, and the western city of Lviv—far from the frontlines. The attacks persisted into Friday afternoon, with Ukraine's air force indicating that missiles targeted the northern Cherkasy region, hitting the city of Smilla. Additional missiles were detected originating from Russia's Kursk region, heading towards the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy.

The scale and intensity of the attack drew swift condemnation from numerous Western nations and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. He strongly denounced the large-scale missile and drone assault by Russia, emphasizing that such attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure violate international humanitarian law and must cease immediately.

The Ukrainian military reported the use of 158 drones and missiles by Russia, including advanced hypersonic Kinzhal missiles, cruise missiles, and Shahed drones, in the strikes on Kyiv, the east, south, and west of the country. The air force spokesperson, Yurii Ihnat, noted that the enemy had delivered a powerful blow, resulting in downed targets and unfortunate casualties.

The gravity of the situation prompted the Polish military to report an unidentified airborne object entering Polish airspace from Ukrainian territory. Although preliminary indicators suggested a Russian missile's entry and exit from Polish airspace, Russia refused to provide explanations until concrete evidence was presented.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned Russia's use of nearly every type of weapon in its arsenal in what he described as "terrorist strikes." Despite the devastating assault, he pledged that Ukraine's military would respond to defend the nation against this onslaught.

The timing of this massive assault is noteworthy, occurring shortly after Ukraine struck a Russian Navy landing ship in Crimea, causing significant damage. However, it also follows the receipt of the last package of military aid from the United States, pending Congress's approval of the Biden administration's funding request.

President Biden urgently called on Congress to pass additional assistance to Ukraine, emphasizing that without swift action, the United States would be unable to continue providing the necessary weapons and air defense systems. Biden's funding request, amounting to nearly $60 billion, has encountered delays amid negotiations over US immigration rules.

As the conflict approaches its two-year mark since Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, President Zelensky faces a challenging counteroffensive, and Western aid has begun to dwindle. In a surprise move, Zelensky made a visit to troops in the fiercely contested city of Avdiivka, underscoring Ukraine's resilience in defending its territory.

The devastating strikes on Ukrainian cities resulted in significant civilian casualties and widespread destruction. The Russian ambassador to the United Nations claimed that Moscow targeted military sites, denying intentional harm to civilians. However, Ukraine contended that many of the buildings struck were civilian, including hospitals.

Kyiv, the capital, witnessed at least seven fatalities and dozens of injuries as a metro station and residential buildings were targeted. Kharkiv faced a massive attack, with more than 20 strikes reported, including on a hospital. Other regions, such as Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, and Dnipro, also experienced casualties and destruction. The international community, including the European Union, expressed solidarity with Ukraine, vowing support for as long as needed.

As the conflict intensifies, Ukrainians face the harsh reality of continued warfare, with civilians becoming direct targets. The immediate need for increased military and financial assistance to Ukraine is evident, and the international community must rally to counter Russian aggression and support the resilience of the Ukrainian people.

Amid these tragic events, the world watches with concern, recognizing the urgent necessity for decisive action to halt the bloodshed and protect the sovereignty of Ukraine against this unprecedented and ruthless assault by Russia.
