Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Attends IIT Delhi Abu Dhabi Inauguration, Launches New Education Partnerships

His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, recently attended the inauguration of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi Abu Dhabi (IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi). This marks the first international campus of India’s premier STEM education and research institution, IIT-Delhi.

The event also highlighted the establishment of strategic partnerships between IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi and several esteemed higher education institutions in Abu Dhabi. These institutions include Khalifa University, Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, and Zayed University.

The collaboration between IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi and Khalifa University will focus on joint research and academic programs, the sharing of research facilities and lab spaces, and the exchange of students and faculty members. The partnership with Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi will enable joint research projects, postgraduate student exchanges, and the organization of seminars and scientific meetings.

Further, IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi’s alliance with Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence will involve joint research through seed project grants, collaborative teaching and training programs, and hosting internships. The partnership with Zayed University will facilitate faculty and student exchanges, collaborative educational and research activities, co-supervised graduation research, and joint academic events such as conferences, seminars, and workshops.

During his visit, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed toured the new campus and explored the diverse academic programs offered by the institute. These include Bachelor of Technology (BTech) programs in Energy Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering, designed to address energy challenges and shape the future of digital technologies. The master's program in Energy Transition and Sustainability (ETS) was also highlighted, aiming to develop leaders who will guide global communities toward effective energy transition solutions.

Sheikh Khaled emphasized the importance of IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi in realizing the leadership’s vision of creating a diverse and inclusive global hub for education and knowledge development. He underscored the role of the institute in supporting Abu Dhabi’s efforts to combat climate change and nurture future leaders in sustainability. 

He also noted that the institute’s opening underscores the competitiveness of the UAE’s advanced education ecosystem, enhancing the emirate’s status as a global center for research and development and facilitating the continuous development of national talent in key sectors.

Accompanying His Highness were notable figures including His Excellency Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technologies and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of MBZUAI; Her Excellency Shamma Al Mazrui, Minister of Community Development and Chair of the Board of Trustees of Zayed University; Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation and Chair of the Board of Trustees of Paris Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi; Her Excellency Sara Musallam, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge; His Excellency Mubarak Hamad Al Mheiri, Undersecretary at the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge; Rima Al Mokarrab Al Muhairi, Executive Director of Strategic Affairs at the Executive Affairs Authority in Abu Dhabi and Board Member of Zayed University; His Excellency Sunjay Sudhir, Indian Ambassador to the UAE; Professor Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi; and Professor Shantanu Roy, Executive Director of IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi.

The establishment of IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi was formalized through an agreement between the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge, IIT Delhi, and the Ministry of Education of India, which was witnessed by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July 2023. This initiative complements the UAE-India Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and reflects the shared vision of both nations to prioritize educational excellence, innovation, and investment in human capital as key drivers of future prosperity and sustainable development.
