On the morning of Tuesday, July 30, a series of catastrophic landslides struck the hilly areas near Meppadi in Kerala's Wayanad district, causing significant devastation. The landslides, which also affected Mundakkai Town and Chooral Mala, have resulted in at least 24 confirmed deaths and left hundreds feared trapped.
Kerala's Health Minister, Veena George, reported that the bodies of 24 victims have been received at various hospitals, and around 70 people have been injured. Rescue operations are ongoing, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Civil Defence already deployed, and an Indian Navy team is expected to arrive soon. The situation has been further complicated by the washing away of a bridge in the affected area.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his condolences and confirmed that he assured Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of "all possible help" in dealing with the crisis. Former Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has voiced his deep concern and stated that he would be speaking with Union ministers to expedite aid for Wayanad. He also extended his sympathy to the bereaved families and called for coordinated rescue efforts.

Chief Minister Vijayan has confirmed that all relevant government agencies are actively involved in the rescue operations. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has deployed Fireforce and NDRF teams to the disaster-stricken areas and is coordinating with the Kannur Defence Security Corps for additional support. The state’s health department and the National Health Mission have established a control room to manage relief efforts.
The ongoing rescue operations are being hampered by continuous heavy rainfall, which has further destabilized the terrain. A secondary landslide occurred around 4 a.m. near Chooral Mala School, which was serving as a relief camp. This landslide caused additional flooding and casualties, with at least five more reported dead. The collapse of a crucial bridge in Chooral Mala Town has stranded about 400 families, and several vehicles have been swept away.
Emergency assistance is available through the contact numbers 9656938689 and 8086010833. The response to this disaster has seen a united effort from local and national leaders, with a focus on rescuing trapped individuals, providing medical care, and restoring normalcy in the affected areas of Wayanad.
