Guides in Okinawa, Japan, Elevate Skills for Western Tourists
On a scenic hilltop above Naha, Okinawa, guides from Japan underwent intensive training at Shuri Castle. The program, a collaboration between the Japan Tourist Association and the Adventure Travel Trade Association, spanned five days. Led by ATTA guide trainers Andres Diaz, John Connelly, and Gustavo Timo, the guides honed skills in guest interactions, safety, group management, and storytelling.
This initiative, crucial for sustainable tourism, aims to enhance the Japanese adventure travel experience for Western visitors. Yuki Kuniya, ATTA’s Business Manager for Asia, emphasized the importance of offering a uniquely Japanese welcome to international guests.
The training covered adapting skills for Western clients while preserving a distinctly Japanese experience. Guide excellence is paramount in ensuring travelers' safety, happiness, cultural understanding, and overall trip value.
AdventureEDU, the educational arm of ATTA, supports destination readiness for sustainable travel through training programs like this. The Japan program included in-person and online sessions, enhancing skills and recruiting guides in regions where sustainable tourism is gaining traction.
Andres Diaz, one of the trainers, highlighted the guides' role as advocates for safeguarding natural resources and promoting sustainability. The program involved practical training, encouraging guides to reflect, discuss, and implement sustainability measures in their products.
The collaborative learning environment allowed both trainers and guides to exchange insights, fostering a shared journey toward sustainable tourism. Guides, after practicing storytelling and risk management in Okinawa's forests, continued training in Amami, adapting experiences for Western guests.
Matthew Bennett, one of the students, praised the outdoor, collaborative learning approach, emphasizing its effectiveness over traditional classroom settings. This initiative reflects Japan's strategic investment in long-term quality adventure tourism for Western visitors.
AdventureEDU continues to partner with destinations worldwide, tailoring educational programs to enhance adventure offerings and contribute to sustainable tourism development.
The training in Okinawa and Amami supports the development of tourism projects, aligning with AdventureEDU's mission to equip members with the skills to advance their careers and improve businesses through responsible travel.
ATTA's ongoing initiatives include partnerships with destinations like Tunisia for digital marketing strategy development and an upcoming course on digital transformation for adventure travel businesses in 2024, reflecting a commitment to modernizing operations and enhancing the customer experience.
