Japan Blocks Mount Fuji View, Selfie Spot to Curb Tourist Issues

Officials in Fujikawaguchiko, Japan, have taken a decisive step to address the issue of unruly tourist behavior at popular photo spots near Mount Fuji. To combat the problem, they have decided to obstruct the panoramic views and a particularly favored selfie spot with a mesh net, measuring approximately 2.5 meters in height and 20 meters in length.

According to reports, the decision to block the view was prompted by the increasing incidents of disruptive behavior by tourists who visit the area primarily to capture images of the iconic Mount Fuji. The construction of the mesh net is scheduled to commence next week, as confirmed by a local official.

Instances of misconduct by tourists, such as leaving litter and disregarding traffic regulations despite warnings, have become a growing concern for officials in Fujikawaguchiko. The situation has led to the unfortunate necessity of implementing measures to maintain order and preserve the integrity of the area.

While acknowledging the regrettable nature of the decision, the Fujikawaguchiko official emphasized the need to protect the town's infrastructure and uphold the tranquility of the surroundings. The installation of the mesh net is seen as a proactive step towards achieving these goals.

This move comes in the wake of other efforts across Japan to manage tourism-related issues effectively. Earlier this year, Japan announced plans to implement an entry fee for climbers of Mount Fuji to regulate the number of visitors during the climbing season. Additionally, measures have been taken in Kyoto's Geisha district and the historic Gion district to address concerns related to disruptive behavior and harassment of local residents and cultural practitioners.

These initiatives reflect a broader trend in Japan of balancing the promotion of tourism with the preservation of cultural heritage and environmental sustainability. As destinations grapple with the challenges posed by increasing visitor numbers, proactive measures like the installation of mesh nets serve as a reminder of the importance of responsible tourism practices.
