In a significant escalation of violence, insurgents with links to the Islamic State targeted the town of Macomia in Mozambique's resource-rich Cabo Delgado province, marking their most audacious assault in over three years. Mozambique's government reported that its military successfully repelled the attack within 45 minutes of engagement.
This incident is the latest in a series of attacks since December, underscoring a troubling surge in unrest. Notably, it comes at a critical juncture as the Mozambican government endeavors to persuade TotalEnergies SE to recommence the development of a $20 billion liquefied natural gas project. This project had been halted in 2021 after insurgents overran the nearby town of Palma, resulting in the loss of over 800 lives.

The assault on Macomia unfolded in the early hours of the morning, with insurgents mounting simultaneous attacks on multiple fronts, according to sources familiar with the situation. Reports from the Portuguese news agency Lusa indicate the involvement of over 100 fighters in the onslaught.
Mozambican government forces swiftly responded, capturing one attacker who later died in custody while injuring a leader who managed to escape, as detailed in a late Friday statement. Macomia holds strategic significance due to its location along the main highway linking the provincial capital of Pemba with the northern region. Additionally, it serves as a key military base for hundreds of South African soldiers deployed to aid Mozambique in combating the insurgency since 2021.
However, the South African National Defence Force is slated to withdraw its troops from Mozambique by July 15, as confirmed by the regional bloc overseeing their deployment. Despite this withdrawal, Rwanda has bolstered Mozambique's security efforts by dispatching over 2,000 soldiers and police personnel as part of a separate bilateral agreement. President Filipe Nyusi affirmed that these Rwandan forces will continue to support Mozambique's government in its ongoing fight against insurgency.
As Mozambique grapples with this surge in violence, the incident in Macomia serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by insurgents and the challenges facing regional security efforts in combating extremism.
