US President Donald Trump used the tragedy to attack the policies that promote diversity and inclusion. He blamed these policies, which were introduced by past Democratic leaders, for causing the crash. Trump said that these policies led to hiring unqualified people in the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration).

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said it had recovered the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder from the Bombardier jet that crashed. These devices will help the NTSB learn what caused the accident.

According to reports, there was not enough staff at the control tower of Reagan National Airport. Normally, there should be two controllers managing traffic, but only one was working at the time. This may have played a role in the crash. The plane, American Eagle Flight 5342, was trying to land when it collided with a military helicopter. Both the plane and the helicopter crashed into the Potomac River, and a big fireball appeared in the sky.

So far, more than 40 bodies have been found. Trump spoke about the crash and expressed sadness. But then he started talking about diversity policies and blamed them for the tragedy. He said that his Democratic opponents, Joe Biden and Barack Obama, allowed people who weren’t qualified to work in the FAA.

Trump said that diversity policies, which try to make the workplace fairer, were hurting the safety of planes. He especially criticized Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg for pushing these policies. Buttigieg responded, saying that Trump’s words were wrong and hurtful. Democratic Senator Chris Murphy also criticized Trump for blaming diversity in the FAA for the crash.

Trump later ordered the government to look into whether hiring standards had gotten worse under Biden’s leadership. He also said that people who are unqualified should be replaced.

Among the people who died in the crash were several US figure skaters and coaches. Russian skaters Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov were also on the plane. The crash also killed two Chinese citizens.

The accident happened at night, and air traffic controllers saw a fireball before losing contact with the helicopter. Both planes were flying under normal conditions. The helicopter was operated by a crew that had a lot of experience and was completing a routine check.

This crash has raised many questions about how policies and staffing decisions may affect aviation safety. The NTSB will continue to investigate, and the recovered black boxes will help to understand what caused the collision.
