Indian students will get fewer study visas to the United States in 2024. The US State Department says that between January and September this year, only 64,008 Indian students were given F-1 visas. This is a big drop of 38% compared to the same time last year when 1,03,495 students got visas. This is the lowest number of visas given since 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic when just 6,646 visas were approved in the same month.
After the pandemic, the number of Indian students going to the US started to rise. In 2022, 93,181 students got visas by September, and in 2021, the number was 65,235. But in 2024, the numbers fell again.
It’s not just Indian students who are affected. Chinese students, the second-largest group of international students in the US, also got fewer visas this year. Between January and September 2024, 73,781 Chinese students were given F-1 visas. This is 8% fewer than the 80,603 visas given to Chinese students in the same period in 2023. However, this year’s number is still higher than in 2022, when 52,034 Chinese students got F-1 visas.

An F-1 visa allows students from other countries to study full-time in the United States. This is the most common visa for international students in the US.
Even with the drop in visas, Indian students have become the largest group of international students in the US, overtaking Chinese students. The Open Doors 2024 report says that during the 2023-24 academic year, 3,31,000 Indian students were studying in US universities and colleges. This is a big increase from 2,68,923 students in the previous year. At the same time, the number of Chinese students studying in the US has gone down. In the 2023-24 academic year, there were 2,77,398 Chinese students in the US. This is nearly 12,000 fewer than the 2,89,526 students recorded in the 2022-23 academic year.
These numbers show that the trend is changing. More Indian students are going to study in the US, while fewer Chinese students are choosing to go. This change might be because of many reasons, like personal choices or global events.
