Lithium-ion battery ignition led to the fatal fire, claiming Khan's life and injuring 17 others in a six-story apartment building (Twitter).

On a tragic Friday in Harlem, New York, a fatal fire claimed the life of Fazil Khan, a 27-year-old Indian national and accomplished data reporter at the Hechinger Report associated with Columbia University. The Indian Embassy in New York promptly offered support, coordinating with Fazil Khan's family for the repatriation of his remains to India.

Fazil, a distinguished graduate of the Columbia Journalism School and post-graduate fellow for the Global Migration project, commenced his journalistic journey in 2018 as a copy editor at Business Standard. Subsequently, he served as a correspondent at CNN-News18 in Delhi before pursuing further studies in New York in 2020.

The fire, ignited by a lithium-ion battery, erupted around 2 pm on Friday, engulfing the third floor of the St. Nicholas Place apartment building. Fazil Khan tragically lost his life, and 17 others were injured, with twelve rushed to a local hospital, four in critical condition.

John Hodgens, the fire department chief, described the fire's intensity on the third floor, underscoring the challenges faced during rescue operations. Gripping videos and images circulated on social media, depicting the desperate attempts to rescue residents, some resorting to jumping or using fire escapes.

Survivors shared chilling accounts, one escaping with only essentials. Following the incident, the department of buildings issued a comprehensive vacate order. The journalism community mourns Fazil Khan's untimely departure, remembering him as a dedicated professional whose promising career was tragically curtailed by this devastating fire.
