India has been recognized with the esteemed Measles and Rubella Champion Award for its relentless endeavors in combating these infectious ailments, as announced by the health ministry. Conferred by the Measles and Rubella Partnership at the American Red Cross Headquarters in Washington DC on March 6, the award was received by Ambassador Sripriya Ranganathan, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of India, Washington DC, on behalf of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. This partnership comprises a collaborative planning committee involving various agencies such as the American Red Cross, BMGF, GAVI, US CDC, UNF, UNICEF, and WHO, all dedicated to diminishing global measles-related fatalities and averting rubella afflictions, the health ministry delineated in a statement.
The accolade underscores India's steadfast commitment to public health and its exceptional leadership in curtailing the transmission of these infectious diseases among children, the ministry stated. It further lauds India's regional stewardship in the measles and rubella elimination program by utilizing "measles as a tracer" to fortify routine immunization within the country's Universal Immunization Programme (UIP). Despite encountering myriad challenges, India has showcased notable strides in diminishing measles and rubella instances and forestalling outbreaks through a series of comprehensive interventions, the statement emphasized.
India's proactive MR (Measles-Rubella) vaccination campaign in high-risk regions, coupled with innovative strategies to reach marginalized populations, robust surveillance mechanisms, and efficacious public-awareness campaigns, have been instrumental in safeguarding the populace's health and well-being. The award stands as a testament to the unwavering dedication and tireless efforts of the nation's frontline health workers, healthcare practitioners, policymakers, and communities across the expanse of the country.
These endeavors have yielded significant results, with 50 districts consistently reporting no measles cases and 226 districts devoid of rubella cases over the past year. Measles and rubella, both vaccine-preventable diseases, have been integrated into India's UIP since 2017, with the government striving towards their elimination from the nation, the statement reiterated.
