Galatasaray had a tough night in the UEFA Europa League last 16 play-off round, losing 4-1 to Dutch club AZ Alkmaar. The first leg of the knockout tie was played at AFAS Stadium, where Galatasaray struggled against a strong opponent.
After the heavy defeat, head coach Okan Buruk became the center of criticism, especially on social media. However, the Galatasaray management showed their support for him, making it clear that they still have confidence in their coach.
"WE MADE MISTAKES AND GAVE CHANCES TO OUR OPPONENT"
At the post-match press conference, Okan Buruk admitted that it was a difficult game for the team. He openly talked about the mistakes made on the field and how they affected the result.

"Today was a bad day for us. We did everything wrong. We conceded a bad penalty, then went down to ten men. That made the scoreline even worse," said Buruk.
Despite the disappointing result, Buruk pointed out that there were moments in the game when Galatasaray played well. However, he also emphasized that the team made poor choices in key situations.
"We started the game well and did some good things, but at the same time, we failed to defend properly. When we had the ball, we made bad decisions and too many passing mistakes. A team like Galatasaray should not make such mistakes. At times, we gave the opponent opportunities with our own feet. That’s why we suffered such a heavy defeat."
Buruk also reflected on the team's overall performance and said, "I have been thinking a lot about whether we did anything right today. Honestly, I cannot find much to say. In the end, the result speaks for itself."
"IF WE HAD WON, OUR FUTURE WOULD BE MUCH CLEARER"
Buruk expressed deep sadness over the defeat but reminded everyone that the season is not over yet.
"This was a really bad day for us, and I feel the pain of this loss deeply. But we cannot just focus on this one match. We are still in the race, both in Europe and in the Turkish league. Right now, we are 6 points ahead of our closest rival in the league."
He also explained that the team is going through a transition period due to injuries, suspensions, and new players joining the squad.
"This was the toughest match for us during this period. We had new players, injured players, and suspended players. If we had won this game, things would have looked much better for us moving forward. Unfortunately, that did not happen."
FANS CRITICIZE OKAN BURUK AFTER THE MATCH
Following the match, there was a wave of criticism directed at Okan Buruk, especially on social media. Many fans questioned his tactics and decisions, blaming him for the team’s poor performance.
IBRAHIM HATIPOĞLU SHOWS SUPPORT FOR OKAN BURUK
Amid the criticism, Galatasaray Sportif A.Ş. Vice President Ibrahim Hatipoğlu stepped in to support Okan Buruk.
Hatipoğlu shared a post on social media, backing the coach and showing trust in his leadership. His statement quickly gained attention, sparking discussions among fans and football analysts.
Even though the 4-1 defeat was a major disappointment, the Galatasaray management’s support for Buruk suggests that they still believe he is the right man for the job. The team will now focus on the upcoming fixtures, hoping to bounce back from this tough loss.
