Sharjah: At the International Photography Festival (Xposure) in Sharjah, a panel of digital creators discussed how storytelling is evolving with technology. They agreed that while Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital tools are shaping the future of storytelling, the human element remains essential. The discussion, titled “From Imagination to Reality: The Power of World-Building”, took place at Aljada, Sharjah, on Monday as part of the festival’s 9th edition.
The experts on the panel spoke about the growing use of AI in storytelling and virtual world-building. They noted that while AI can enhance creative projects, many people are still hesitant to fully accept digital methods.

Siraj Jhaveri, an award-winning director with over 30 years of experience in commercials, music videos, documentaries, and digital content, compared today’s AI-driven changes to the invention of electricity. He explained that just as electricity replaced old, labor-intensive ways of lighting up spaces, AI could transform the way we use knowledge.
“AI could replace knowledge,” Jhaveri stated, urging people to rethink what they are truly gaining when they use technology. For those new to world-building and virtual storytelling, he advised reading more stories, as understanding human emotions is crucial. “Humans are complicated, and storytelling helps us connect with them,” he said.
Yohan Wadia, a creative director who specializes in combining AI with storytelling, described AI as a powerful tool that can build virtual worlds faster than ever. However, he also pointed out that it must be used wisely.
“For me, AI acts like a creative exoskeleton—it helps me work faster and try out different ideas,” Wadia said. He also spoke about the accessibility of digital tools today, explaining that many platforms are available for creators worldwide. Yet, one major reason people hesitate to accept AI-generated content is the fear of the unknown.
Arthur Baum, a director of photography and self-taught Unreal Engine artist, shared a different perspective. While he appreciates the flexibility and cost-effectiveness of virtual sets, he still values traditional filmmaking with real actors and natural imperfections.
“The essence of storytelling and photography has not changed,” he explained. “But I still want to create real-life films that capture raw emotions—something that’s hard to replicate in Unreal Engine.”
Baum also compared the rise of AI to the nuclear age, warning that AI could be misused to spread false information. He encouraged storytellers to step away from screens now and then, pick up a camera, visit a museum, and experience real-world creativity.
The discussion was moderated by Bjoern Lauen, the founder and executive producer of Glaswerk, a UAE-based production house. The session left attendees with a key takeaway: while AI is an incredible tool, the heart of storytelling will always be human connection. As technology advances, creators must find ways to blend AI’s efficiency with the depth and emotion of real-life experiences.
