Hamas returns four hostage bodies, Israel releases Palestinian prisoners

A ceasefire started on January 19 and has mostly stayed in place, but there have been some problems. The first part of the deal is ending this week, and no one knows what will happen next. Hamas said it has not received any new offers for the next steps.

After many days of waiting, Egypt helped make a deal. Hamas gave back the bodies of four Israeli hostages, and in return, Israel agreed to free 620 Palestinians. These people were either in Israeli jails or caught by Israeli soldiers in Gaza.

On Saturday, Hamas gave Israel six hostages in a public event where they showed the hostages and also some dead bodies in coffins. Many people, including the United Nations, said this was wrong. Because of this, Israel refused to release any Palestinian prisoners that day.

This time, the exchange was done quietly. Early on Thursday, Israel received four dead bodies from Hamas. Israel’s Prime Minister’s Office said the bodies were being checked, and once confirmed, their families would be told.

Hamas said the hostages were Tsachi Idan, Itzhak Elgarat, Ohad Yahalomi, and Shlomo Mantzur. They were taken from their homes in Israel on October 7, 2023.

There were also some mistakes in the exchange. Earlier, Hamas gave Israel the wrong body, a woman instead of Shiri Bibas. They corrected this mistake the next day and gave the right body.

Israel’s health ministry said doctors would check the bodies to find out how the hostages died.

Israeli officials say about 30 hostages have died in Gaza. Some were killed by Hamas, and some died when Israel attacked Gaza.

The 620 Palestinians that Israel is releasing include 445 men and 24 women and children who were arrested in Gaza. There are also 151 prisoners who were in jail for attacking Israelis, Hamas sources said.
